ISLAMABAD: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has ‘re-described’ constituencies following administrative changes made by the provincial government, and has not redrawn constituency boundaries in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.
In a statement explaining its move a day earlier, the commission claimed that it has the power to ‘re-describe’ constituencies under Rule 15 of the Election Rules 2017 following changes to administrative divisions, adding that this has been done before.
The provincial government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa had made changes to administrative units in various districts, including the formation of new districts and tehsils, as well as changes to certain tehsils, it said.
The ECP maintained that existing constituency boundaries would not change, and they remain the same as they were during the 2024 general elections.
The commission also maintained that Section 22 of the Elections Act 2017 — which makes it mandatory for the ECP to invite and hear representations over its proposed alterations — does not apply in this instance, as no constituency has been redrawn.
