ISLAMABAD: With timely interpretation of an electrocardiogram often critical to detecting life-threatening heart rhythm disorders, the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (Pims) organised a specialised workshop to sharpen clinicians’ ability to read complex ECGs and make rapid treatment decisions.
The fourth quarterly ECG workshop, titled “Complex ECG Decoded”, was held at the Shaheed Nawaz Auditorium as a pre-conference academic activity for the 55th Annual International Cardiocon 2026.
Pims Executive Director Prof Dr Tanweer Khaliq attended the workshop as guest of honour. The workshop focused on complex ECG interpretation and its practical application in recognising and managing cardiac rhythm disorders, particularly in acute and emergency care.
Prof Brig Azmat Hayat, head of Electrophysiology at Pims, served as workshop director, while Dr Shahab Saidullah was workshop secretary and Dr Muniba Saeed moderated the sessions.
The scientific programme covered a range of challenging cardiac conditions, including sick sinus syndrome, bradyarrhythmias, narrow- and broad-complex tachycardias and inherited electrical disorders of the heart.
Prof Brig Azmat Hayat also conducted an interactive session on interpretation of complex ECG findings, linking diagnostic patterns with clinical decision-making.
The organisers said the workshop was designed for postgraduate trainees, medical officers, house officers, medical students, nurses and technicians, with the aim of strengthening practical skills needed for timely recognition of potentially fatal rhythm disturbances.
The scientific sessions featured Dr Saleha, Dr Atif Rauf, Dr Qurban Hussain Khan, Dr Hassan Kamal and Dr Shahab Saidullah. Topics included sick sinus syndrome, slow heart rhythms, narrow- and broad-complex tachycardias, and inherited electrical disorders of the heart relevant to acute and emergency care.
The event was part of academic activities preceding Cardiocon 2026, scheduled to be held from Nov 19 to 22 at Serena Hotel, Islamabad, under the theme “Precision, Equity and Action in Cardiovascular Health: Global Perspectives”.
