KARACHI: The groundbreaking for a Rs14 billion project to lay a dedicated pipeline from Dumlottee to supply 10 million gallons of water per day to the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) was performed at a ceremony held at the filtration plant site on Creek Avenue, Phase VII.

Speaking on the occasion, Local Government Minister Nasir Shah said: “We consider DHA as our own and the provincial government will continue to give development projects to DHA.”

He said that funds had been secured for the pipeline project, which had been awarded to the Frontier Works Organisation (FWO). He expressed the hope that the project would be completed ahead of schedule.

Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab told the gathering that the scheme would benefit hundreds of thousands of residents.

“The project was a long-standing demand of DHA residents as past commitments for water supply were never materialised,” he added.

The mayor said that the chief minister had provided a Rs14bn loan to the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) to execute the scheme involving laying of a dedicated High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE) main transmission line from Dumlottee, pumping at the source and filtration and treatment facilities at the DHA interface.

The project will be executed jointly by the provincial government, KWSC, DHA, Cantonment Board Clifton and FWO.

Mr Wahab said that the pipeline would provide DHA with an additional, modern engineered water source.

He said that the project would be completed within 12 months.

He said that another 10 MGD dedicated line for Lyari was ready and would be inaugurated by Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah and PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari soon.

On sewage treatment, he said that Karachi was the first city to start treating sewage on a large scale, with 35 MGD currently being treated, and the capacity would be enhanced to 100 MGD by January 2027.
