SAHIWAL: The regional office of the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) arrested a suspected terrorist operative affiliated with the banned Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP), also known as the Al-Khawarij Group, and recovered 2,203 grams of explosive material from village 19/SP, Pakpattan tehsil, on Monday night.
Reports said acting on a tip-off that a terrorist affiliated with a banned outfit was planning an attack, a CTD team led by officer Waseem Akhter raided an area near Pakpattan Chowk.
During the operation, the team arrested a suspect identified as Abdur Rahim, a resident of Mohalla Academy Town, University Road, Peshawar, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. On his identification, the team recovered a shoulder bag containing 2,203 grams of explosive material, improvised explosive devices (IEDs), an iron box, electrical devices, prima cord, mobile phones, detonators, two double-charge batteries, switches, six to eight feet of wires and Rs2,350 in cash.
A camera reportedly used for recording and photography was also seized.
The Bomb Disposal Squad, led by Asghar Ali, was called to the scene. He informed the CTD team that the detonators and wiring were live and could be used to cause an explosion. The bomb disposal team defused all the devices and subsequently secured them in packets.
A case was registered against Abdur Rahim under Sections 4 and 5 of the Explosives Act, 1908, and Sections 11-F(2) and 7 of the Anti-Terrorism Act, 1997, on the complaint of Waseem Akhter.
Sources told Dawn that the Special Judge of the Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) granted the CTD seven-day physical remand of the suspect and handed him over to the department for investigation. The suspect is to be produced before the court again on Oct 5.
UNWHOLESOME MEAT: Yousafwala police registered a case against three persons for supplying unhygienic meat to citizens at Imtiaz Mega Mall near village 84/5-L, Sahiwal Khanewal national highway on Monday night.
Reports said 273kg unhealthy and unhygienic meat and animal trotters was recovered. The case was registered against Muhammad Majid, Muhammad Saleem, Brothers Meat Dealers, and Sohail Bashir. According to details, Additional Deputy Commissioner Adnan Rasheed, acting on a public complaint, raided Imtiaz Mega Mall along with Dr. Usama Hassan Afzal, slaughter officer, and Nauman Qaiser, head, Pera Force.
They found mutton, beef, and animal trotters to be substandard, and unfit for human consumption. The team seized 50kg trotters, 60 pieces of mutton (100 kg), and beef (113 kg).
The mart slaughterhouse was found to be unauthorised and illegal as owners failed to show any papers to livestock team. Later, Yousafwala Police registered a case under Sections 3, 2A, 3, 2B, 3, 1, and 3, 3A (ii) of the Punjab Animal Slaughter Control Act on the complaint of Dr. Usama Hassan Afzal.
Police are yet to arrest the suspects.
