TOBA TEK SINGH: Villagers living along the banks of the Chenab River in Jhang have urged Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif to direct relevant departments to take urgent measures to protect their land and settlements from river erosion.
Farmers belonging to Mauza Jindhran, Dhohyn Sydan, Khohra and other adjacent localities said that erosion had swallowed vast area of cultivated land.
They claimed that the Chenab had gradually eroded several kilometres of fertile agricultural land and was now threatening residential areas of Jhang.
They added that the situation was becoming alarming and expressed fear that continued erosion could cause further damage to farmland, homes and public buildings. They sought immediate protective measures to prevent further losses.
Meanwhile, taking notice of the situation, Jhang Deputy Commissioner Babar Sahib Din, along with senior officials of the Revenue and Irrigation departments visited the affected areas, met affected families and listened to their grievances.
The DC assured the villagers that a proposal would soon be submitted to the Punjab government for diversion of the river flow away from vulnerable localities to prevent further erosion while safeguarding the interests of inhabitants of the areas.
ARRESTED: Faisalabad’s Jaranwala Saddar police have arrested through Interpol a murder case proclaimed offender from Kuwait.
CPO Tanweer Hussain Tanvio told reporters that seven years ago accused Muhammad Aslam Tabassum and his accomplices had shot dead Muhammad Nawaz in 2019 in Chak 649 GB to take revenge of the murder of his father Zafar. Other accomplices were arrested but accused had fled abroad.
He added that recently it was traced that he was residing in Kuwait over which police requested Interpol and due to assistance of Interpol police party headed by SHO Malik Muhammad Imran arrested the accused in Kuwait.
Meanwhile a blind murder of a young man has been traced and his friend has turned out as his killer by Khurrianwala police on Thursday.
Police said body of deceased Imdad was recovered on July 25 from a deserted place outside Chak 210 RB.
