Unfair duties

INTERNATIONAL air travel from Pakistan has become increasingly unaffordable, particularly for senior citizens who, due to age and health reasons, often need to travel Business or Club class.

Unfortunately, the government levies an exorbitant destination-based federal excise duty (FED) on these ticket classes of Rs350,000 for United States and Canada, Rs210,000 for Europe and Australia, and Rs105,000 for the Middle East. On top of this, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) collects Rs16,000 as withholding tax on every ticket beyond the Economy class.

For elderly Pakistanis travelling to reunite with family abroad or to seek medical treatment, this taxation is not only excessive, but deeply unjust. Travelling in comfort is often a medical necessity, but air travel is being taxed at exorbitant rates. The relevant agencies should revisit the current policy and introduce a meaningful exemption in FED for senior citizens aged 65 years and above.
