ENDLESS CRITICISM: Modern era has normalised criticism and open discussion of problems, but it remains scarce in terms of providing solutions. Social media has now become a great tool to highlight societal issues, with no remedy ever available across such platforms. There is no dearth of discussions revolving around corruption, unemployment, poverty, education and the decline of morality in society, but every such thread simply fades away without suggesting any potential solution. Society is not built on discussions that are mere laments without any cerebral input. As such, individuals pointing out social ills should also come up with some practical solutions.

ILLICIT TRADE: Illicit trade is threatening tax-compliant companies in Pakistan. With over 45 billion non-duty-paid cigarettes sold annually, the exchequer loses an estimated Rs350 billion every year. However, recent enforcement drive by the relevant authorities deserves recognition. From sealing illegal manufacturing units and seizing finished stocks to intercepting raw materials, including a landmark seizure of 3,900kg of acetate tow in Multan worth Rs205 million, the Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) and Pakistan Customs have demonstrated a level of operational commitment that is yielding real results. Consistent actions will provide a level playing field to all players.

BEYOND BOREDOM: This refers to the column ‘The useless work’ (May 24) which provided relief in suggesting that there is value to uselessness, “even bore-dom”. It is so reassuring to know that moments of weakness hold significant value. I wondered how universal it is when people like Viet have spent hours on a chair with “no guarantee that anything transformative was happening”. I feel that the courage to hold on comes from passion, not mere interest. Interest fades without rewards, whereas passion trans-cends calculated success. Passionate people stay longer; the interested wander away.
