A tanker near the blockaded Strait of Hormuz has suffered a fire in its engine room, a marine monitoring agency has said without revealing the cause of the blaze, AFP reports.

“Local authorities have reported a tanker has experienced a fire in the engine room,” United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations says, adding that the incident occurred 21 nautical miles northeast of Sohar in Oman.

The Indian embassy in Oman says on X that the crew of the ship, Jalveer, is being evacuated by the Omani navy, without mentioning the nationality of the crew or the cause of the fire.

According to British marine security firm Vanguard, the Guinea-Bissau-flagged tanker has 20 crew members aboard.
