LAHORE: The Lahore High Court on Tuesday restrained the Punjab Revenue Authority (PRA) from collecting sales tax from lawyers.

A two-member bench headed by Justice Abid Aziz Sheikh heard the petition filed by Lahore High Court Bar Association President Babar Murtaza against the imposition of the sales tax.

The court also sought replies from the Punjab government and the PRA within two weeks.

The petition contended that the collection of sales tax from lawyers was illegal in light of the Legal Practitioner and Bar Council Act 1973. It further argued that bar associations did not receive government funding and that lawyers themselves bore the expenses of running bar affairs from their own pockets.

The petition requested the court to declare the sales tax imposed on lawyers by the PRA null and void.
