Nato Secretary-General Mark Rutte says the alliance “cannot confirm” Israel’s claim that missiles targeting Diego Garcia were Iranian intercontinental ballistic missiles, Al Jazeera reports.

Speaking to CBS News, Rutte has nonetheless backed US President Donald Trump’s war on Iran, framing it as necessary and urging public support.

“I’ve seen the polling but I really hope the American people will be with him, because he’s doing this to make the whole world safe,” he has said

Rutte has also signalled Nato alignment with Washington saying member states are expected to rally behind Trump despite delays in coordination.

“I understand the president’s frustration that it takes some time, but again I also ask for some understanding because nations had to prepare for this not knowing,” Rutte has said.
