SWABI: Two people were killed and 10, including three women, suffered injuries as five vehicles collided with each other on the Islamabad-Peshawar Motorway near Swabi Interchange before Monday midnight, Rescue 1122 said.

Rescue 1122 Swabi spokesperson Luqman Khan told Dawn on Tuesday that a speeding trailer had an accident on the Islamabad-Peshawar Motorway near Swabi Interchange.

He added that the vehicle blocked the road, resulting in multiple vehicles coming from behind colliding with each other and no one knew what had happened.

“Five vehicles collided with each other,” said an official of the motorway.

He said that as the vehicles were speeding, controlling them wasn’t possible, causing the accident.

The spokesperson said one of the passengers was killed on the spot, while the other was pronounced dead by doctors in the hospital.

The vehicles involved in the accident were on the way from Peshawar to Islamabad. The accident also halted the flow of traffic on the motorway as many vehicles were badly damaged.

The motorway police immediately showed up and contacted Rescue 1122 whose teams reached the site shortly to start rescue operations.

After providing first aid to the injured, the rescue personnel shifted 10 injured to Bacha Khan Teaching Hospital Shahmansoor where emergency was declared.

When contacted, spokesperson for Bacha Khan Hospital Raham Yousafzai said that the hospital had received two bodies for postmortem and 10 injured.

“In the maimed passengers, five were stated in critical condition, three of them were very serious and shifted to intensive care for head injuries. Three people with minor injuries were discharged,” he said.

The spokesperson said the hospital director had put all emergency staff on high alert and the required facilities were provided to the injured free of charge.

The rescue teams removed the damaged vehicles, restoring traffic.

The deceased were identified as Mohammad Sharif (Chakwal) and Salimullah (Chakdarra), while the injured included Mohammad Ikram, Mohammad Qadeer, Khitabullah, Umar Azad Khan, Mohammad Karim, Shabana, Shazia, Rahat Bibi, Ziaullah and Wahidullah.

LAPTOPS DISTRIBUTED: Laptops were distributed among 250 students under the Prime Minister’s Youth Laptop Scheme at the University of Swabi here on Tuesday.

A ceremony was held for the purpose at the University of Swabi.

Adviser to the prime minister on Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit-Baltistan Amir Muqam was the chief guest on the occasion.

He said that the Prime Minister’s Youth Laptop Scheme was an important initiative to equip the youth with modern technology and provide opportunities to move forward in the field of education.
