German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has spoken on the phone with Israel’s President Isaac Herzog and expressed hope that an agreement on the release of the hostages and a ceasefire in Gaza can be reached within the next few days, Reuters reports.
A German government spokesperson said the talks in Egypt must now lead to a swift agreement and Hamas should lay down its arms.
