QUETTA: An anti-terrorism court (ATC) on Thursday extended the physical remand of Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) chief organiser Dr Mahrang Baloch and three other leaders for another 15 days in police custody.
Mahrang Baloch and the detained BYC activists were produced before Judge Muhammad Ali Mobeen after the expiry of their previous remand.
Police officials pleaded that Mahrang Baloch and other BYC leaders were still required for investigation and requested a 15-day extension.
“The judge, accepting the police request, extended the physical remand of the BYC leader and other activists for another 15 days in custody,” said Israr Baloch, lawyer for Mahrang Baloch. He added that Bebow Baloch, Sibghat Ullah Shahjee, Gulzadi Baloch and Beberg Baloch were also produced before the court.
Mahrang Baloch was arrested along with other BYC members on March 22 this year.
The arrests came a day after the group staged a sit-in along with some bodies to protest alleged enforced disappearances.
The BYC chief organiser and other members were detained under Section 3 of the MPO — a law that empowers authorities to detain individuals suspected of posing a threat to public order — for an initial period of 30 days. Since then, the ATC has continued extending their physical remand after each expiry.
