MARDAN: A tree plantation campaign was formally launched at the new campus of Women University Mardan as part of the provincial government’s initiative to address the growing threats of climate change and environmental degradation.

The inauguration ceremony was graced by MPA Tariq Aryani, Vice Chancellor of Women University Mardan Prof Dr Razia Sultana, Vice Chancellor of Abdul Wali Khan University Mardan Prof Dr Jameel Ahmad, Vice Chancellor of University of Engineering Mardan Prof Dr. Gul Muhammad, Director ORIC Halima Ikram and Area Manager Bank of Khyber Muhammad Kashif.

Speaking at the event, Dr Razia Sultana highlighted the urgent need for large-scale tree plantation in the face of rising global temperatures, irregular rainfall patterns, and extreme weather events. “In the context of climate change, tree plantation is no longer just an environmental initiative, but a necessity for survival,” she said.

She stressed that trees were vital for reducing carbon levels, improving air quality, restoring biodiversity, and stabilising ecosystems.

Dr Razia also appreciated the support of the Bank of Khyber for turning this initiative into a reality. She stated that a substantial number of saplings were being planted across the university’s new campus with the goal of transforming it into a green, sustainable, and climate-resilient academic environment.

MPA Tariq Aryani lauded the university’s leadership for its environmental stewardship and stressed the need for such campaigns across educational institutions in the province. “The youth must be involved in such meaningful actions to secure a greener future for generations to come,” he added.
