LAHORE: The Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), Punjab, has issued a high-alert, warning for an intense heatwave expected to grip the province from June 7 to 12, coinciding with Eidul Azha celebrations.

Punjab Relief Commissioner Nabeel Javed directed all divisional commissioners, deputy commissioners and relevant departments to implement emergency measures to mitigate risk posed by the expected heatwave.

According to meteorological advisories, daytime temperatures in central and upper Punjab may soar by 5-7 degrees Celsius above normal, while southern parts of the province will experience a 4-6 degrees Celsius spike, accompanied by dust storms and gusty winds.

The heatwave poses severe health risks, particularly to children, the elderly, and outdoor workers.

PDMA Director General Irfan Ali Kathia emphasised proactive steps, including the deployment of mobile health teams, installation of shaded shelters and water booths at public spaces, and mass awareness campaigns via media and mosques.

Rescue 1122 has been put on a high-alert to handle heatstroke and dehydration emergencies, while hospitals are instructed to stock oral re-hydration salts (ORS) and first-aid supplies.

Citizens are urged to avoid exposure to sun, stay hydrated, wear light clothing and limit outdoor activities, especially during peak and afternoon hours.

Authorities have also advised judicious water usage and special care for the livestock. In case of emergencies, the public can contact PDMA’s helpline 1129 or Rescue 1122.

The provincial government ordered district administrations to ensure compliance with heatwave guidelines to safeguard public health during Eid days.
