KARACHI: The Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) has formally challenged the multi-year tariff (MYT) granted to the K-Electric by the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (Nepra), describing the seven-year tariff as “the most expensive and anti-consumer decision in recent history”.

In his review petition filed under the Nepra Review Regulations 2009 on Wednesday, JI-Karachi chief Monem Zafar stated that the controversial tariff was illegal, non-transparent and contrary to the public interest.

Nepra had approved KE’s transmission and distribution MYT for the period FY2023-24 to FY2029-30 on May 23. However, the JI has accused the Nepra of granting the KE unjustified financial concessions — similar to those given to independent power producers (IPPs) — despite the KE not being classified as one.

The petition highlighted that the KE had been unjustly allowed a dollar-indexed return on equity (RoE), even though the company was not covered under the 2002 Power Policy or any IPP framework.

The JI also objected to Nepra allowing the KE to claim losses based on a 92.76 per cent recovery rate, while the utility had already achieved a 96.7pc recovery in 2022.
