QUETTA: The Balochistan government has extended the detention of Baloch Yakjehti Committee (BYC) leader Dr Mahrang Baloch and other activists for another month.

Ms Baloch, the BYC chief organiser, and Beebow Baloch were arrested on March 22 and shifted to the Quetta district Jail. They were detained for 30 days under Section 3 of the Maintenance of Public Order Ordinance, which allows authorities to detain people suspected of endangering public safety or order.

The provincial Home Depart­m­e­­nt, through a notification on Monday, extended the detention till May 22.

Imran Baloch Advocate, lawyer of the detained BYC leader, confirmed the Home Department’s notification.

Earlier this month, the Balochistan High Court (BHC) decided a petition seeking Ms Baloch’s release, asking her sister, Nadia Baloch, to approach the Home Department on this issue.

Following the verdict, Advocate Imran said they would approach the Home department as per the court’s order and if the detention of Ms Baloch was upheld, they would again approach the high court.

The BYC leader’s lawyers had yet to approach the Home Department.

The BYC chief organiser is facing over a dozen cases registered on the charges of terrorism, sedition and murder.
