KARACHI: A woman was killed and her teenage daughter suffered burns when her uncle sprinkled petrol on them and set them on fire in Korangi on Monday morning, police and rescue services officials said.

Awami Colony SHO Mohammed Saud said that suspect Dilawar entered his brother’s house near Bagh-i-Jinnah in Korangi, Sector-10 at around 11am.

He said that Dilawar allegedly set his brother’s wife, Gulshan Rashid, 45, and her 16-year-old daughter, Asma, on fire by sprinkling petrol on them and fled.

The officer said Gulshan’s teenage son, Ahmed, also suffered burn wounds while trying to save his mother and sister.

The victims were taken to the Burns Centre of the Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi where doctors declared the woman dead on arrival.

The officer said that the condition of her daughter was also critical.

Her son, however, suffered minor burns, he said and attributed some ‘family dispute’ as a probable motive for the incident.

The area SHO said that the victim’s husband, Rashid Khan, had verbally told the police that his elder brother Dilawar was involved in the incident. However, the police were waiting for him to formally lodge an FIR to initiate legal proceedings, he added.

The crime scene unit of the police also visited the house and collected evidence.
