KARACHI: Mayor Murtaza Wahab announced on Tuesday that the membership of Karachi as a “C40 City” was officially restored after a three-year hiatus.

The C40 network is a set of major cities around the world that have committed to fighting climate change.

“The C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group had deactivated Karachi’s membership in 2022, but the city’s prominent status has now been reinstated,” he said in a statement.

It said that Mark Watts, the executive director of the C40 Cities Climate Group, wrote a letter to the mayor and commended efforts in developing the Paris-Aligned Climate Action Plan (CAP). He expressed confidence that the city would successfully meet the 2021-24 Leadership Standards by the March 2025 deadline, which includes finalising and implementing the CAP as required.

“Now Karachi must accelerate progress on remaining tasks to meet all C40 membership criteria,” the mayor said, adding: “The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation is committed to adhering to international environmental standards to ensure the city’s sustainable future.”
