LAHORE: Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Yahya Afridi on Friday visited Rahim Yar Khan district jail as part of his visit to remote areas of the country.

Lahore High Court’s Justice Syed Shahbaz Ali Rizvi, the registrar of the Supreme Court, the district and sessions judge of Rahim Yar Khan and the inspector general of prisons accompanied the CJP.

During the inspection of the jail, the chief justice reviewed the facilities provided to inmates. He visited the female and juvenile sections, in particular, the jail dispensary and bakery and showed satisfaction. He also met the under-trial and convicted prisoners.

CJP Afridi said that there were certain prisoners whose cases were moving at slow pace. He desired that the sessions judge examine such cases of abnormal delay and ensure speedy disposal.

He emphasised upon the skill development of the inmates so they contribute towards society after completing their jail term. He appreciated the efforts of philanthropist organizations in providing additional facilities of health and education.

The chief justice directed the district judiciary to avail a window of law and justice commission in payment of fines of convicted prisoners and financing of legal aid to deserving inmates. He lauded the efforts of the Jail Superintendent in maintaining the premises of the prison in good condition.

Later, the inspector general of prison briefed CJP Afridi on the ongoing and planned infrastructure improvement program and provision of facilities to the inmates.

The chief justice expressed his satisfaction of up-gradation efforts and support provided by the government of Punjab. However, he directed the IG to move ahead on his planned changes in the prison manual so that its improvement should begin appearing.

He also urged the establishment of a prison complex in Rahim Yar Khan and Lahore as well.
