RAWALPINDI: The Punjab government has posted a district police officer (DPO) and chief traffic officer (CTO) on a permanent basis to Murree for the first time after the hilly area was declared a district.

The postings were made in response to Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s concerns about a protest held against the government by PTI supporters on Independence Day.

In addition, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Murree Raja Arshad Mehmood has been transferred to Central Police Office Lahore for negligence while DSP Security Rawalpindi Waqar Azeem, who was on duty in Murree, has been transferred to Faisalabad.

After the Murree incident, the chief minister rushed to Rawalpindi and held a meeting with police officers and the commissioner and expressed her displeasure over the failure of the district administration and police in checking the protest.

The government has now made a reshuffle of police officers in Rawalpindi and for the first time posted Asif Amin Awan, a grade 19 PSP officer, as the DPO Murree and Mughees Ahmad Hashmi, a grade 18 officer of PSP, as the chief traffic officer.

Mr Hashmi was serving as the SP investigation in Allama Iqbal Town Lahore while Mr Awan was posted as AIG discipline at the CPO Lahore.

On the other hand, SSP Special Branch Rawalpindi Bilal Iftikhar has been posted as DPO Jhang while Zunera Azfar, SSP Investigation Rawalpindi, has been transferred to Special Branch Rawalpindi.

Meanwhile, a teenage girl allegedly committed suicide by hanging from the ceiling fan in her house at Chontra on Tuesday.

Initial police report said the 16-year-old girl, a resident of Chak Beli Road, ended her life due to domestic issues.
