QUETTA: A long march protest, comprising traders, civil society members, and political activists from various parties, continued on Tuesday towards Quetta, the provincial capital.

The protest began in the border town of Mashkel against the closure of a border crossing point at the Pakistan-Iran border.

“Our protest march will continue until the border point with Iran is reopened, as it is our lifeline for earning a livelihood for our families,” said Mir Jiand Khan Reki, a local traders’ leader, who is leading the march along with other protesters.

“We have currently reached Parod and will reach Noshki by Wednesday,” he added.

“The feet of some of our marchers are wounded from walking, yet they refuse to abandon the march, saying it’s a matter of their survival,” the march leader said.

“On the other hand, people are welcoming the participants wherever we reach, showing their support for our cause.”

Mr Reki added: “We initiated the protest march after a 33-day sit-in in Nashkel, but unfortunately, the government officials concerned have yet to take notice of our protest. Mashkel and surrounding areas are facing severe shortages of food and other essential supplies. We will stage a protest in front of the Balochistan Assembly once we reach Quetta.”
