SOUL-SEARCHING

SOUL-SEARCHING: The core problems of Pakistan are rooted in a systemic lack of robust institutions and a pervasive culture of political exclusivity. We have not nurtured strong, independent institutions that may act as impartial guardians of the Constitution and ensure a level playing field for all. Political participation remains limited, with a winner-take-all mentality leaving vast segments of the population feeling marginalised and unheard. The current political climate has only exacerbated this sense of alienation. This fosters a climate of distrust, and hinders efforts to address the nation’s most pressing challenges.

TRAFFIC VIOLATIONS: This refers to the letter ‘Karachi encroachments’ (April 1). The Mansfield Street in Karachi’s Saddar area has also been encroached upon by cartwheelers, vendors and hotels on both sides of the road. This road is for one-way traffic, but due to encroachments, heavy traffic and violation of traffic rules, especially one-way violation, it has become very dangerous for all pedestrians. The authorities concerned should look into the matter immediately.

SOCIAL MEDIA AND THE FUTURE: Technology is surely winning the race over culture and traditions. The social media has become the new and preferred form of communication, with people-to-people contact having to take the proverbial backseat. Making use of technological tools, miscreants are out to spread anarchy. This does not bode well for the future.

DOG-BITES: Incidents of dog-bite have increased and so have the cases of rabies, which is a viral disease that causes inflammation in the human brain and spinal cord. Unsurprisingly, the numbers that are being reported in the national media from across the country — from Gilgit-Baltistan to Larkana — should set the alarm bells ringing.
