WATER WOES IN KARACHI: The water supplied by the Karachi Water and Sewerage Corporation (KWSC) is approximately 665MGD against a demand ranging between 820MGD and 1,200MGD. Most of the surface and drinking water sources contain high levels of lead. The residents of Karachi pay their water and sewerage bill regularly, but face an acute shortage of water in various areas, such as North Karachi, New Karachi, Orangi Town, Gulshan-i-Iqbal, Liaquatabad, Manzoor Colony and Mehmoodabad. Improving water resource management, setting up water filtration plants, cleaning out rivers and lakes, building more storage facilities, and promoting water conservation can help alleviate the crisis.

PAINFUL PAVEMENTS: While using a sidewalk on the Khaliq-uz-Zaman Road in Karachi recently, my right foot suddenly started bleeding. I sat down on the footpath to see what the matter was. I was astonished to find a sharp piece of broken mirror that had injured my foot badly. The incident is narrated as a reminder to the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) to clean the roads and remove all dangerous pieces of mirrors and glasses from the footpaths.

NO GAS FOR IFTAR: The residents of Rawalpindi have been facing immense challenges at Iftar time due to the acute shortage of gas supply. The lack of gas disrupts meal preparation, and adds to the stress and inconvenience faced by those fasting. Despite repeated promises of adequate gas supply by successive governments, the situation has remained troublesome. The authorities need to ensure the provision of gas well before Iftar time, enhance infrastructure to meet the growing demand, and prioritise equitable distribution of gas resources. Additionally, there is a need for greater transparency and accountability in the management of gas supply to prevent such a crisis in the future. The authorities concerned should wake up from slumber.
