The Grand Democratic Alliance (GDA), Jamaat-i-Islami (JI) and Jamiat-i-Ulema Islam-Fazl (JUI-F) have demanded fresh elections, warning that their protests against alleged rigging in the February 8 general elections will intensify otherwise.

In a protest outside the Karachi Press Club, GDA’s Safdar Ali Abbasi said that a committee comprising 10 members of all opposition parties was formed to decide the future course of action.

“If justice does not prevail then the protests will intensify,” he said, claiming that the mandate of the public was “stolen”.

JI leader Usama Razi alleged that the people’s mandate was snatched and “terrorists” were imposed on Karachi. “People will not accept the hybrid dictatorship,” he added.
