Officials from the Justice Ministry have told Haaretz that the International Court of Justice in The Hague is not expected to call for a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, even though it could issue injunctions against Israel.
The jurists explained that the hearings on today and tomorrow in The Hague, which will hear a South African charge of “genocide” against Israel in its operations in Gaza, the court can instruct Israel to allow humanitarian aid in the Strip, to establish an independent inquiry or to allow displaced Palestinians to return to northern Gaza.
The Justice Ministry officials added that there is a very real chance that the World Court will agree to South Africa’s demands and will issue some kind of injunction against Israel.
