Passenger security

THIS is with reference to the report “‘Time bomb’ found in train at Karachi’s Cantt Station” (Dec 23). The incident aboard the Awam Express presents a deeply troubling situation, signifying a critical threat to the safety of passengers and railway staff.

The bomb was found by a railway employee in an unattended bag. It was, fortunately, timely diffused by the bomb disposable squad. It sends shivers down one’s spine just thinking what would have happened had the bag not been discovered and the bomb had not been diffused timely. The scary incident raises concern about the vulnerability of public transportation systems in the country, and highlights the imminent danger posed by acts of terrorism targeting essential services.

It is a fact that the registration of a terrorism case against unidentified individuals underscores the gravity of the situation, necessitating a compre-hensive investigation to identify and apprehend those responsible. A thorough probe is crucial not only to deliver justice, but also to prevent potential future threats, reinforcing the imperative of robust security measures within railway systems.

The incident has underscored the impor- tance of having well-trained personnel and efficient crisis management protocols as well as the need for heightened security measures and public awareness to ensure the safety of the people.

Enhanced vigilance by both passengers and railway staff is needed to detect and report suspicious activities promptly. There is an indispensable role of robust security protocols, regular drills, and investment in advanced technologies to mitigate potential security threats.

It is imperative for the authorities concerned to collaborate with the public, implement stringent measures, and fortify the resilience of railway systems to safeguard the precious lives and wellbeing of passengers and railway personnel alike.
