KARACHI: A man attacked his former wife with acid and then bludgeoned her to death in Gulistan-i-Jauhar on Saturday, police said.

SSP-East Irfan Bahadur said that the police arrested the suspect, identified as Naimatullah Gilani, and registered a case on the complaint of the victim’s family.

He said that Gilani had arrived at his former wife Tanveer Bano’s home in Block 7, attacked her with acid and then hit her with a hard and blunt weapon causing her death.

“The suspect has been taken into custody and brought to the police station for formal investigation,” the SSP said, adding that the victim got a divorce around one year ago.

Her children told the police that their father used to threaten her of dire consequences.

The body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for a post-mortem examination.

Police Surgeon Summaiya Syed said that the 50-year-old woman had suffered “corrosive substance burns on upper body caused by acid”.

She added that there were acid wounds on the face and back as well. Her clothes were also torn apart, ostensibly when she ran for shelter.

“There were also multiple injuries on the head/skull causing fracture due to violent impacts of a hard and blunt object,” she said, opining that she was hit with an ‘iron rod.’

The police surgeon said that victim’s daughter Rabia was also brought at the JPMC as she also suffered minor burns on the hands and forehead. She was referred to the Burns Centre of the Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi for further treatment, she added.
