RAWALPINDI: Former Punjab chief minister Chaudhry Parvez Elahi was arrested by the National Accountability Bureau shortly after he was released from Adiala jail on Monday.

According to sources, the Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf’s central president was released upon completion of his detention period. But as soon as he walked out of Adiala jail’s gate, he was taken into custody by a NAB team, headed by Deputy Director Najamul Hassan. The team consisted of personnel from the bureau’s Rawalpindi and Lahore zones.

In reply to a question about reasons for his fresh imprisonment, Mr Elahi quipped: “Let them fulfil their desire.”

Later, police obtained a one-day transitory remand of the PTI leader from a court in Rawalpindi.

Mr Elahi was rearrested for allegedly receiving bribe over development project contracts, Dawn.com reported

The PTI president was first arrested on June 1 in connection with a corruption case. He was discharged in the said case the very next day, only to be arrested in another.

In mid-July, Mr Elahi — ordered to be released from Lahore’s Camp Jail — was detained under MPO ordinance for 30 days. The NAB team took Mr Elahi into custody from the Adiala Jail, his lawyer Amir Saeed Rawn confirmed to Dawn.com.
