UNDERGROUND CAPITALISM: This is with reference to the article “The ‘One Per Cent Republic’” (Nov 10). Number crunchers are usually considered to be robots with flesh and skin, but the former finance minister proved otherwise. His views on the elitist concentration of wealth, leadership and power are to be pondered over because nations only prosper with welfare and equality of opportunities. Underground capitalism prevailing in Pakistan is much more detrimental than capitalism upfront.

PROTEST VENUES: Everyone has the right to protest against injustice, but in doing so one should not cause inconvenience to others. Sadly, protests have become unncessarily common in Pakistan. It is the politicians who bring the masses out on the streets, and sometimes people themselves take to the streets to have their protest registered. Instead of blocking roads and highways, people must protest in front of the house or office of the individuals concerned.

UNEVEN ROADS: The Karachi Metro-politan Corporation (KMC) is supposed to provide basic municipal services across its jurisdiction. However, uneven surfaces and potholes are the main features of most roads in Karachi. It is high time the officials concerned paid serious attention to the matter. People pay their taxes and have the right to grumble and complain when they do not get what they have paid for.

CONTRABAND CONSUMPTION: This is with reference to a video that went viral on social media recently, showing a young lad dancing while waving a liquor bottle. The video was made during a wedding in Khuzdar. Such functions are attended by dancing groups trained in do chappi or saey chappi, a cultural dance. During such celebrations, liquor consumption is quite common. The authorities concerned should implement the relevant rules related to prohibition of this practice.
