HISTORICAL REFERENCE: This is with reference to the article ‘Resolving conflicts’ (Sept 16) which mentioned the historical episode in which the Prophet (PBUH) himself removed the title ‘Rasul Allah’ from the agreement that was being signed with the rival camp. The article mentioned the event as part of Mithaq-i-Madina, but the fact is that the incident took place at the time of the Treaty (Sulh) of Hudaybiyyah.

ANOTHER JOLT: Karachi Electric (KE) has suddenly started deducting 8pc withholding tax on the benefit allowed to net metering consumers without mentioning the particular section/clause of the relevant law. Together with the expected reduction in buyback price, and the levy of sales tax on the units consumed, it means solar energy is no more feasible. Besides, the Defence Housing Authority (DHA) has served notice to the residents to get their installations regularised by paying charges and penalty. Is it what really the government policy is regarding solar energy?

LIP SERVICE: This is regarding a recent statement by a senior government office-holder to the effect that “millions are held back from learning and living a life of dignity and empowerment”. The person concerned shied away from pointing out the reasons behind such a failure. The public-sector education and health mechanisms in rural areas, where those ‘millions’ live, require immediate and serious attention of the government itself. Officials would do well to go beyond paying lip service to social issues.

COLLEGE BUSES: The Atta Shad Degree College in Turbat has been facing a host of issues ranging from lack of hostels to limited number of buses. A lot of students come from adjoining areas and are forced to travel on the roof of buses, which is not only a threat to their lives, but a difficult task in sweltering weather that the city has for most part of the year. The relevant authorities should resolve the issue.
