HALF-BAKED DEMOCRACY: This refers to the letter ‘Smaller provinces’ (June 21). The proposal has been aired many times to improve governance and promote genuine democracy through wider participation of people. In effect, such a course would strengthen democratic traditions and alleviate the sense of deprivation among the population. However, the creation of more provinces is unlikely to materialise as it does not suit the ruling elite. As such, the country will continue to experience what at best is a half-baked democracy.

HUMAN TRAFFICKING: Human trafficking is a multi-billion-dollar ‘industry’ across the globe. Thousands of impoverished girls from the former Soviet Union are said to be forced into the global flesh trade. The situation is alarming in Pakistan. The United Nations has identified Pakistan among the top three countries to be involved in such inhuman and illegal trade. Unemployment, political instability and poverty push humans into this quagmire. The government must chalk out strict laws to stop this notorious trade.

MENDING WAYS: Public rallies are a total waste of time and financial resources. They are organised to abuse and degrade the opponents instead of highlighting real problems. Moreover, such rallies encourage people to think of violence and extremism. One has yet to see a positive outcome of such an approach to any problem.

PROLONGED CONSTRUCTION: Jahangir road, passing the nearby Daak-khana flyover, is the main artery that connects the area with, say, Numaish and Saddar. However, the development work on the road has been going on for months, leaving the residents in a lurch. Moreover, the harsh monsoon spell has exacerbated the issues for area residents. While the administration has clearly failed, the residents look up to the higher judiciary to intervene on its own.
