GUJRAT: A cricket stadium is being constructed along Bhimbher Road at a cost of Rs74 million.

Though the project was part of the annual development budget of 2017-18, litigation delayed the execution.

The sports department has now launched the project after the Punjab government earmarked Rs59 million, said an official of the department.

Up to 89 kanals in front of the Government College for Women, Marghzar Colony, have been earmarked for the stadium.

Both the women’s college and the cricket stadium belong to Zamindar College.

The project includes a pavilion, floodlights, ground, a 250KVA standby generator, cricket articles and the drainage system.

Local cricket players said that the construction of spectators’ stand should have been included in the scheme, however, they said they were satisfied with the initiation of the project.

A senior administrative official said a proposal for the establishment of a hockey ground adjacent to the cricket stadium might

be proposed in the next fiscal year’s development budget as there was enough land available in the vicinity.
