LAHORE: IGP Rao Sardar Ali Khan has directed the traffic department to make video recording of driving tests to make the system of issuing computerised driving licences to the citizens more transparent.

He also directed the traffic police to launch crackdown on overloading which is one of the major causes of big accidents and obstruction of smooth flow of traffic on roads.

The IGP was heading a meeting of the traffic police Punjab at the Central Police Office here on Friday. Additional IG Operations Sahibzada Shehzad Sultan, Additional IG Welfare and Finance Farooq Mazhar and Punjab DIG Traffic Sohail Akhtar Sukhera were also present.

The IG directed efficient use of modern technology in traffic management and said prevention of accidents was the need of the hour to make the issuance of traffic licences transparent. He said the safe city cameras should be used for smooth flow of traffic along with e-challaning so that citizens may be saved from blockades.

Rao Sardar further said delay in registration of accident cases was not acceptable and data of traffic accidents should be updated across the province. He emphasised close coordination and data sharing with the Rescue 1122.

Mr Sukhera briefed the IGP on special drive being carried out in all the districts of the province to prevent overloading. He said 217 cases had been registered, 437 vehicles impounded in different police stations and 211 drivers arrested.

He apprised the IGP that in view of the dangers of smog, action was also being taken against high-emission vehicles across the province. Five special vigilance teams had been formed to make the process of issuance of driving licences more transparent.
