SUKKUR: A team of Sukkur FIA arrested former project director of Shaheed Benazir Bhutto Medical University (SBBMU) in Naudero on Sunday on charges of committing Rs400 million corruption in funds for the construction of the university’s campus at Areeja in Larkana.

The team took into custody Engineer Abdul Waheed Mangi when he was on his way to Naudero from Larkana along with his family and sought two-day physical remand of the suspect from a special court in Sukkur. The judge granted the remand.

The Higher Education Commission had released Rs12 billion for the construction of the Areeja campus in Larkana and later found out the project director Mangi had committed Rs400 million corruption in the funds.

The HEC conducted investigation into the corruption charges and dismissed Mangi as the project director but later he was reinstated under political pressure.

The SBBMU standing committee was to hold a session on this issue on Sept 21 but the suspect was arrested by FIA team.
