KARACHI: The Leader of the Opposition in the Sindh Assembly Firdous Shamim Naqvi on Thursday questioned the credibility of the Sindh Public Service Commission (SPSC) and accused the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) of converting the institution into party’s entity being run with “political biases” depriving many talented and intelligent youngsters of their due right.

Addressing a press conference with fellow Member of Provincial Assembly (MPA) Arsalan Taj Ghumman at his Sindh Assembly office, he said that the new recruitments being made through the SPSC were violating rules of merit and causing disappointment as well as hatred among youngsters against the ruling PPP.

‘Karachi ignored’

“The SPSC has been in fact converted into PPP service commission,” he said. “New recruitments through the SPSC are not being made on the basis of merit. We immediately demand a thorough probe into the SPSC recruitments process and we would like forensic experts to be made part of the investigation team, who can expose all those illegalities and injustices which are made with care and technique, which cannot be caught in a conventional inquiry process. The PPP has ignored the people and youngsters of Karachi in these recruitments.”

He referred to recent appointment for the Sindh Revenue Board where dozens of people were hired through SPSC and “none of them practically met the merit, but cleared all tests and exams of the provincial commission”.

More than 60 per cent of the SRB recruitments, he claimed, were made ignoring transparency and merit in the process.

He also criticised the performance of the PPP government on Rs1.1 trillion Karachi package announced by Prime Minister Imran Khan in September 2020 after the heavy rains.

“Why the Sindh government doesn’t share its performance and progress so far on the package,” he said. “Where are the new tenders? Which areas of the city have been marked to execute the development package? The PM had clearly asked the chief minster to lead the development programme of Karachi, but what he has done so far in this regard as a team leader? We are really concerned that with such performance of the PPP government, the much expected results of this package would not meet the expectations.”

The opposition leader also questioned the provincial budget spending and its numbers, saying that the PPP government had kept lawmakers, people and their representatives ignorant of facts, raising doubts about the progress of the development projects and transparency in the public money affairs.
