KARACHI: Senior PPP politician and member of the Sindh Assembly Jam Madad Ali Khan passed away on Friday, his family and party officials said. He was 58.

A close family member said that Jam Madad was found Covid-19 positive more than a month ago, but he recovered after a couple of weeks and tested negative for coronavirus.

However, he suffered post-disease complications and his arteries ruptured leading to fatal complications, he added.

“He remained hospitalised for more than a month for treatment, but couldn’t recover and finally was moved on ventilator, but couldn’t survive,” he said adding that he was survived by two widows, two sons and a daughter.

His funeral prayers will be offered on Saturday [today] in his hometown Taluka Jam Nawaz Ali, district Sanghar at 4pm.

He started his active political role during the era of his uncle and former Sindh chief minister Jam Sadiq Ali in early 1990s.

He started his parliamentary career from the platform of the Pakistan Muslim League-Function (PML-F) and became an MPA on its ticket.

He was again re-elected as a PML-F MPA in 2002 and 2008 in two consecutive elections and also served as the chairman of the Public Accounts Committee of the Sindh Assembly and leader of the opposition.

In 2017, he joined the PPP and became legislator from its platform from Sanghar in 2018 elections. He was chairman of the standing committee on transport and a member of the standing committee on finance at the time of his death.

Meanwhile, PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, Sindh Governor Imran Ismail and Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah in their separate statements expressed grief over his death and offered condolence to the grieving family.
