LONDON: The situation in Southern Africa has now reached such a point of oppression and injustice, so far as many Africans are concerned, that the only means of protest left them are violent ones, says an independent group set up by the British Council of Churches (BCC).

In its report, which will be published on Oct 29, the group suggests it is hypocrisy for Western Christians to claim the right to use force in World War to defend justice, and to deny that same right to Africans. — Agency

[Meanwhile, as reported by an agency in Algiers,] American psychologist, Timothy Leary, founder of the L.S.D. hallucinatory drug cult, has sought political asylum in Algeria, it was reported here yesterday [Oct 20]. Dr Leary… escaped from San Luis Obispo prison in California last September 12, and managed to evade a wide US police dragnet to reach Algeria. …

At a New York Press conference a spokesman for the Youth International Party (YIPPY) read a letter purporting to be from Prof Leary. The letter protested against the arrest of black militant philosophy teacher Angela Davis and praised the Weathermen, an extreme-leftist organisation, which, said Dr Leary, had helped him escape from his California jail. — Agency
