Janitors’ salary

Published February 18, 2020

THE Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has set up an outstanding and pioneering example of setting minimum wages for its contracted janitors. I thank and appreciate the CAA for this praiseworthy action of raising the contracted janitors’ salaries from Rs15,000 to Rs25,000 per month.

It is ironic that many state organisations continue to violate the relevant law by paying less than minimum wage defined by law to their contracted janitors. The Cantonment Board Clifton which still continues to pay illegal, inhuman and exploitative salaries (Rs12,000 per month) to their contracted janitors is a case in point.

I hope that they too will follow the CAA example and put an immediate end to this modern day slavery.
