APROPOS the letter ‘Forensic evidence’ (Aug 9). I would like to clarify that Sindh currently has two facilities for the collection and examination of evidence.

A DNA laboratory at Liaquat University of Medical and Health Sciences in Jamshoro where evidence in 1,500 cases has been examined and decisions in several cases have been taken owing to the presentation of evidence based on the DNA reports from this laboratory. Additionally there is a forensic laboratory (since Aug 1) at the IBCC research centre at Karachi University.

This laboratory is equipped with hi-tech machinery and a highly trained staff. Concurrently, the Sindh government has decided to set up Sindh Forensic Agency, a forensic facility which will look at DNA, toxicology and narcotics.

The home department has also taken initiative to hold conferences for prosecution and investigation where experts guide investigators in methods of collection and recording of evidence to improve the quality of investigation and chances of convictions based on irrefutable evidence.

However, there is much to be done. Therefore, the Sindh government has approved the establishment of Sindh Prosecution Academy for which an act will soon be presented in Sindh Assembly for enactment.

Through the above measures, the Sindh government assures that it is committed to improving the criminal justice system.
