DACCA: The Six-point Awami League chief, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, today [June 22] called for the framing of a constitution by the representatives of the people elected on the basis of direct adult franchise.

... He said the object of these elections would be to bring into being a federal parliamentary structure which would provide the country with representative legislature and a civilian government to which power should be transferred immediately. The federal legislature, according to him, should also function as a constituent assembly and should deliver the constitution within six months.

... After Sheikh Mujib’s statement today, three parties — Maulana Bhashani’s National Awami Party, Pro-Wali Khan NAP and Six-Point Awami League — have so far expressed themselves against the restoration of 1956 Constitution.

The Sheikh reaffirmed his party’s commitment to the adoption of a constitution for the country on the basis of Six-point programme and the 11-point programme of the students. He said his party is “firmly wedded to the concept of full regional autonomy, representation in the federal structure on the basis of population, and dismemberment of One Unit”. The Awami League, he said, would submit its programme to the Nation for electoral ratification. — Correspondent
