Younis fails to reach deal with PCB

LAHORE: Former Test captain Younis Khan has failed to come to a consensus with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) over potentially taking up the role as coach and chief selector of the national junior team, well-informed sources told Dawn on Tuesday.

Younis and the PCB were in negotiations over the former batsman taking up the two roles but sources in the board said that he was demanding a hefty remuneration and extraordinary powers which were not offered to him.

The PCB had earlier wanted to appoint former star pacer Shoaib Akhtar on the two posts but they couldn’t agree on a deal before shifting their attention to Younis, who led Pakistan to their maiden World T20 triumph in 2009 and retired from the game in 2017.

Both gentleman in question are not suitable for these positions due to their previous track record and temperamental disposition. These two are great legends of the game but do not have the temperament and skills to handle demands of coach and selector all at the same time. I also do not think that it is a good idea to make one individual that powerful. Chairman of selectors should never be the coach of the team.

Coaching requires a professional qualification and related experience. These two are not coach material however they can be good mentors for the junior national team.

It is a shame that PCB could not retain a cricketer icon like Younis Khan to coach the national junior team. While I agree the coach cannot also hold the chief selector position due to conflicts of interest, however, PCB should have offered him a handsome package to attract him to take the head coach position. Shoaib Akthur would NOT make a good coach and is all talk so I am glad he is not the coach, he would fail miserably.

@khalil, pathetic. Younis is absolutely righ and he is not Shoaib Akhtar. A person who the team needed more than he needed the team, deserves utmost respect. Whilst the administrators earn monthly incomes in the tens of thousands of dollars, you cant give the local players and coaches peanuts in wages. It reeks of hypocrisy. Well done Younis, plenty of other countries would offer you coach status, like India, England, Bangladesh. Why else does Wasim Akram not coach in Pakistan, he knows there is no respect. Just for the record, Younis is also a world cup winning captain, his management skills are second to none. PCBs loss.

After a miserable show by Inzamam-ul-Haq, whose entire tenure and legacy has been revolving around nepotism and cronyism only, it's better to make Younis Khan the Chief Selector of the senior greenshirts team, as based on merit, he fully deserves it.
