Tanveer named Wapda skipper

LAHORE, July 15: Former Pakistan skipper Tanveer Ahmed will lead Wapda in the first national football Challenge Cup (Stage-II), in which his team takes on Pakistan Police in the first match in Faisalabad on Saturday.

Wapda are placed in Group-I with Khan Research Laboratories (KRL), Wohaib Club, Lahore; Panther Club, Faisalabad; Pakistan Police, Karachi Electric Supply Corporation ( KESC) and Pakistan Navy.

All the matches are scheduled to be held at Panther Sports Complex, Faisalabad.

Defender Tanveer Ahmed led Pakistan in the first Islamic Solidarity Games at Taif, Saudi Arabia last April, in which Pakistan failed to qualify for the second round after losing to Morocco and Malaysia by identical margins 2-0.

Wapda, five-time winners of national championships in 1983, 1991, 2001, 2003, 2004, also took part in the inaugural AFC President’s Cup last May and finished sixth.

They were runners-up in national championships in 1984, 1993, 1994 and PFF President Cup in 1984 and 2002. Wapda also won 1992 National Games held in Lahore.
