KARACHI: Adviser to Sindh Chief Minister on Information and Law Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Tuesday said Thar Coal Power Project would transform Pakistan into a country of lights and change its destiny radically.

Speaking to reporters at his office, he said it was the dream of ex-premier Benazir Bhutto and “today her dream has [been] realised”.

He said: “The smoke emitting from the chimney of Thar Coal Power Project is the indication of progress and prosperity of Thar and the rest of Pakistan.”

Barrister Wahab said the present leadership of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) had turned Benazir Bhutto’s dream of 1996 into reality. Every Pakistani would benefit from the fruit of the landmark project that would solve the country’s power woes once and for all, he added.

He said the second production unit comprising of 330 megawatts (MW) would be functional on Wednesday [today] following which Thar project would begin transmitting 660MW electricity into the national grid.

“This project will [boost] up industrial revolution in Pakistan. Our country will be on the right direction towards the path of progress,” he said.

Mr Wahab said the PPP had always strived for development and dignity of the country, which was indicative from its role in turning Pakistan into a nuclear power and bringing “revolutionary reforms” in the energy sector.

MITHI: PPP leadership and officials of the Sindh government and Sindh Engro Coal Mining Company (SECMC) on Tuesday confirmed that PPP chairman Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari would reach Thar on Wednesday (today).

Mr Bhutto, along with Sindh CM Syed Murad Ali Shah and other dignitaries, after landing at Mai Bakhtawar Airport would proceed to Thar coalfield where they would formally inaugurate two power plants of 330MW each.
