LAHORE: The West Pakistan Education Minister, Khan Mohammad Ali Khan, announced here today [Jan 23] that new university laws were being enacted to replace the existing ordinances governing the six Universities in the Province. In a Press statement, he said the first of a series of bills providing for new constitution for the Universities will be introduced in the Provincial Assembly tomorrow.

The first bills will relate to the Punjab Uni­versity. The remaining bills about the rest of the Universities will also be introduced during the current session of the Assembly. The news laws, formulated in the light of the President’s six-point programme, will equally benefit teachers and students, Mr Mohammad Ali Khan added.

The proposed bill would carry the following salient features: the provision of withdrawal of degrees or diplomas by the chancellor has been dropped; right of appeal against order of any authority to its next higher authority; broad-based syndicate and academic council with representatives of the members of the Provincial Assembly, registered graduates and teachers; principle of autonomy will be strictly observed; treasurer to be appointed by the chancellor for three years will be a person of high status.... — Agencies
