HARIPUR: The office of the Federal Ombudsman will soon launch a programme for the prisoners’ welfare in the Haripur central jail, said Dr Rania Ahsan, adviser to the ombudsman on Friday.

During a meeting with civil society activists, academicians, industrialists, jail authorities and lawyers here, Dr Rania said the office of the Federal Ombudsman would implement the prisoners’ welfare programme in other jails of the country.

She said the work plan for the initiative was prepared the students of Nust and Numl carried out a prisoner need assessment survey.

“In light of the survey findings, the secretariat of the Federal Ombudsman has planned activities for jail reforms,” she said.

The adviser said the work plan would be implemented to help women and children and resourceless prisoners.

She said there were plans to establish a legal aid desk for prisoners inside jails, provide psycho-social support and supply medicines and attach doctors after the establishment of examination room inside jails.
