THE media — print and electronic — is well aware of the kind of governance this hapless nation had to put up with for more than 10 years. The rich meanwhile have become richer. The rupee’s value has nosedived as our rulers have refused to adopt austerity and lived it up at the people’s expense.

In Punjab the poor quality of civil works on recently completed roads and flyovers and the Islamabad airport is of poor quality. However, it is Sindh that has suffered the most. Water, food and health problems prevail in Thar, while the acute water shortage and sewerage disposal in many cities is pathetic.

The less said about Karachi the better. This city is the country’s premier port, financial capital and the source of more than 60 per cent of its revenue is crying for major uplift.

Electricity supply is mostly erratic, public transport is rapidly disappearing from its roads.

This is the world’s only metropolis with no mass transit and the law of the jungle seems to prevail on its thoroughfares, as motorcyclists and rickshaw drivers feel it is their divine right to violate traffic rules. Water has become a precious commodity and in many posh areas is delivered through tankers, at a hefty price of course

Implementation of rule of law is the need of the hour. Let everyone in society, our political parties and lawmakers take a vow to work with honesty and integrity for the betterment of Pakistan and its people. We must wake up before it is too late.
