Democracy

Published October 23, 2018

DESPITE some of its imperfections, democracy is the only form of governance that can grant and preserve the rights and liberties of a people and put a nation on the right track. Countries like the USA, UK and France are leading examples in this regard.

Democracy is an evolutionary process. It evolves and gets better with the passage of time. But it can only lead to tangible success and prosperity if it is allowed to flourish, meaning that there are uninterrupted democratic rules in a specific country.

Despite being an independent country for more than 70 years, Pakistan is yet to see the true form of democracy. Interference from the establishment in the form of direct military rule or control from behind the screen has not allowed democracy to flourish.

It is time all state actors acted within their constitutional domains.
