Players named for high performance camp

LAHORE: The women’s national selection committee headed by former Pakistan cricketer Jalaluddin has picked 27 players for a high performance camp scheduled to be held here at the National Cricket Academy from Sept 12 to 28.

The main objective of the camp is to improve the players’ physical fitness and to enhance their skills. Andy Richards, the batting consultant of Pakistan women’s team, will also join the camp from the first day.

Bismah Maroof has been advised eight-week rest after her operation and will not be part of the said camp.

Hesco triumph

KARACHI: Despite a fine partnership of 99 provided by openers Ahmer Bin Nasir and Mirza Shoaib, Qasmi Gymkhana suffered a 35-run defeat against Hesco Hyderabad in the latest fixture of the Orchid School Royal Premier League Karachi at the RLCA Gulberg Ground here on Monday.

Ahmer blasted 80 off 48 balls (11 fours and one six) and Shoaib made 37 but despite their heroics Qasmi Gymkhana only managed 182-7 in their 20 overs while chasing 218.

Earlier Hesco, opting to bat first, collected 217-5 on the back of a first-wicket stand of 93 through Mohammad Waqas and Wasim Ahmed.

Waqas, who was later adjudged man-of-the-match and received his prize from Qasmi Gymkhana skipper Abid Qasmi, hit a 40-ball 86 (eight fours and five sixes) while Wasim contributed 32.

Lal Kumar hoisted four sixes in scoring an undefeated 50 from 32 balls.

Three matches decided

LAHORE: Three matches were decided in the first round of the Lahore Regional Cricket Association U-16 Tournament at different grounds here on Monday.

West Zone Whites beat West Zone Blues by eight wickets at Cricket Center Ground, North Zone Blues outplayed North Zone Whites by nine wickets at Stags Ground while East Zone Whites notched up a 38-run victory against East Zone Blues in a rain affected match on better run-rate at Ittefaq Ground.

32 players shortlisted after basketball trials

KARACHI: Karachi Basketball Association on Sunday shortlisted 32 women basketball players for the National Women Basketball Championship after the three-day trials held at the Armabagh courts.

As many as 85 women players participated in the trials from Karachi’s six regions under the supervision of KBBA chief Ghulam Mohammad, former international player Abdul Nasir and Zaeema Khatoon.

The final trials for the short-listed 32 players will now be held on Sept 6 at 4:00pm.

Umer, Kamran shine for Stags

LAHORE: A fine century by Umer Butt and an equally good all-round performance by Kamran Afzal guided Stags Club to beat Dar Club by a big margin of 101 runs in the 16h M Siddiq Memorial Cricket Tournament here on Monday.

Umer hit a knock of 105 with the help of nine boundaries while Kamran also made a precious 68 with five sixes and three boundaries as Stags Club earned a total of 247-6 in 40 overs.

In reply, Dar Club slumped to 146 in 31.3 overs with no key scorer. Kamran also excelled with the leather taking five wickets for just 12 runs.

PCA to hold Defence Day cycle races

LAHORE: The Punjab Cycling Association (PCA) will hold six races in different classes here on Sept 6 to celebrate the Defence Day of Pakistan. The races to be held are in 1km Time Trial for Juniors, 1000 meters sprint for Juniors, 1km Time Trial for Seniors, 1000 Meters sprint for Seniors, 500 meters Time Trial for females, 1000 meters sprint for females.

Idris Haider Khawaja, Secretary General, Punjab Olympic Association will be the chief guest on the occasion.—Sports Reporter

Punjab U-15 football matches drawn

LAHORE: Two matches played in the Punjab U-15 Boys Football Cup ended in tame draw at the Punjab Stadium here on Monday.

In the first match, Faisalabad and Multan played a 1-1 draw with Wasif scoring a goal for Faisalabad and Noman Javed for Multan.

In the second match of the day, Rawalpindi and D G Khan played a 0-0 draw. All four teams were awarded one point each.
