KARACHI: Two men were killed and 12 others injured in an explosion inside the oil storage area of Keamari on Saturday, police and hospital officials said. Two of the injured were stated to be in critical condition.

“A molasses tank exploded accidentally in the F&B factory oil area,” said City SSP Sheeraz Nazeer. Two workers died while seven others were injured, he added.

However, Dr Qarar Ahmed Abbasi, additional police surgeon of the Dr Ruth Pfau Civil Hospital Karachi told Dawn that they received two workers brought dead and 12 others with injuries. Of them, six persons were admitted for treatment and the six others were discharged after first aid.

Dr Abbasi said the condition of two of the injured persons was critical.

He added that the police had cleared the area.

“Since no complaint has been received so far, no FIR has been registered,” said SSP Nazeer.

“We will recommend to the quarters concerned to conduct an inquiry to find out the cause of the explosion.”

One of the dead was identified as Kishore Raja, 35, and the other as Mazhar Hussain, 50. Some of the wounded persons were identified as Sultan Shah, 35, Riaz, 50, Shahrukh, 23, Aziz Gul, 60, Azmat Ali, 56, Nasir, 30, Naveed Gul, 55, and Saad, 45.
